The Holy Quran is the final revelation of Allah Almighty and the ultimate source of guidance for all mankind. Every letter of its recitation carries immense reward, and preserving its words exactly as they were revealed is a sacred responsibility. What is Tajweed?
The word Tajweed literally means “to improve” or “to make excellent.” In Islamic terminology, it means giving every letter of the Quran its proper right by pronouncing it from its correct point of articulation (makhraj) with its required characteristics (sifaat), exactly as it was taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The purpose of Tajweed is to preserve the divine words of Allah from alteration in pronunciation and meaning, ensuring that the Quran is recited as it was revealed to Jibreel (عليه السلام), taught to the Prophet ﷺ, and transmitted through the noble Companions and generations of qualified scholars.
The Quran Commands Correct Recitation
Allah Almighty says:
«وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا
“Recite the Quran with measured and careful recitation.”
(Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4)»
Sayyiduna Ali (رضي الله عنه) explained this verse by saying:
«”Tarteel means pronouncing the letters correctly and knowing where to pause.”»
Allah also says:
«الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَتْلُونَهُ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِ
“Those to whom We have given the Book recite it as it should truly be recited.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:121)»
These verses clearly show that the Quran should be recited carefully, accurately, and in accordance with the method taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Guidance from the Sunnah
The Prophet ﷺ instructed:
«”Recite the Quran in the dialects and tones of the Arabs.”»
He also said:
«”Beautify the Quran with your voices.”»
Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The one who is proficient in reciting the Quran will be with the noble and righteous angels. The one who recites it with difficulty, striving to do so correctly, will receive a double reward.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)»
These narrations demonstrate that Muslims are encouraged to recite the Quran beautifully while maintaining its correct pronunciation.
Why is Tajweed Important?
Tajweed is essential because it:
– Preserves the exact words of Allah as they were revealed.
– Protects the meanings of Quranic verses from being altered by incorrect pronunciation.
– Enables the reciter to fulfil the command of Allah to recite with Tarteel.
– Increases the beauty, dignity, and reverence of Quranic recitation.
– Helps the believer earn greater reward through accurate recitation.
– Continues the authentic tradition of recitation passed down from the Prophet ﷺ through an unbroken chain of transmission.
The Ruling on Learning Tajweed
The scholars unanimously agree that learning enough Tajweed to recite the Quran correctly is Fard Ayn (an individual obligation) upon every Muslim. Studying the detailed sciences and advanced rules of Tajweed is Fard Kifayah (a communal obligation).
Imam Ibn al-Jazari (رحمه الله) famously wrote:
«وَالأَخْذُ بِالتَّجْوِيدِ حَتْمٌ لَازِمُ
مَنْ لَمْ يُجَوِّدِ الْقُرْآنَ آثِمُ»
“Applying Tajweed is an obligation. Whoever recites the Quran without observing Tajweed is sinful.”
This refers to deliberately neglecting the essential rules that preserve the correct pronunciation of the Quran.
Learning Tajweed
The Quran is primarily learned through direct recitation before a qualified teacher. Books and recordings are beneficial, but they cannot replace listening, correction, and practical application under an experienced instructor.
Every Muslim should strive to improve their recitation throughout life. Those who sincerely struggle while learning are promised immense reward by Allah.
